When Dry Looks Dry: Why Leak Cleanup Needs a Second Look

Surface dryness is not always the same as dry material below or behind it.

After a small leak, the surface can look dry before the material underneath has fully released moisture. Cabinet bottoms, toe kicks, baseboards, and flooring edges deserve a second look after the first cleanup.

Use smell, staining, soft spots, and repeated dampness as warning signs. Do not claim a space is safe just because visible water is gone. Moisture can remain in hidden layers, especially where airflow is poor.

If the area was wet long enough to affect porous material, or if discoloration or odor appears, pause cosmetic repairs until the moisture question is answered. Covering damp material can make a small problem harder to track later.
